*Only the refreshed versions of the VSX 3000 and VSX 6000 receive FIPS 140-2 support, security mode, secure web, secure telnet and secure FTP. The VSX 6000 is available only in the EMEA and APAC regions.

**Currently all affected systems are on Pre-Validation List awaiting compliance.

H.460 NAT/Firewall support

All VSX and V-series endpoints will include support for the ITU standard for NAT /Firewall traversal, H.460.18/.19. Now session border controllers (Polycom V2IU) are not needed at every location, when the systems at remote locations are VSX systems with H.460 support. This will save organisations money, as well as the time needed to install and support session border controllers at every location.

G.722.1 Annex C support

Recently ratified by the ITU-T standards body as a new audio algorithm, G.722.1 Annex C is based on Polycom’s Siren 14. This new standards based algorithm provides 14kHz audio, while taking up minimum bandwidth (24-48Kbps depending on the data rate of the call). All VSX and V-series systems include this new audio standard.

Configurable MTU packet size

On some networks, it can be crucial for the network administrator to set packet size limits for video conferencing traffic - specifically networks that have restrictions on the maximum size packets that can be sent through them with fragmentation, i.e. VPN tunnels. This feature allows the MTU packet size to be adjusted (the video conferencing IP packets) so that resources are best optimised on any given network. The default packet size is now 1260.

Hungarian/Polish language support

All Polycom video conferencing systems now have support for 15 languages. These include Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English (American), English (British), French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Language support includes more than just the on-screen user interface. Other translated items include:

  1. Documentation (no Hungarian/Polish)
  2. Auditory dialling confirmation
  3. VSX web
  4. Remote control (no Hungarian/Polish)

Enhanced Microsoft LCS integration

VSX Release 8.0 included integration with the Microsoft LCS SIP server. VSX Release 8.5 adds more features when a VSX system is operating in SIP mode and is registered to a Microsoft LCS server, including appearing on buddy lists and showing presence information to other devices registered to the LCS server.

DBC-2 Error Concealment

VSX and V-series systems have included DBC Error Concealment since release 8.0. This included error concealment during H.261, H.263, and H.264 calls. DBC-2 error concealment adds support for error concealment in an MGC conference, and will be fully implemented in a future software release of MGC.

DBC-2 Error Concealment is a Quality of Service implementation designed specifically to manage video transmission during a video call over IP or ISDN networks. In the presence of packet loss due to traffic or instability on the network, error concealment will activate and work to reduce the occurrence of video drop-out during the call. The results are less noticeable video blockiness and dropout during the call, lending to an improved video experience during adverse conditions.

Basic mode in the UI

VSX Release 8.0 included the ability to set a VSX or V-series system to “basic mode”, virtually guaranteeing interoperability between legacy systems. Basic mode sends audio traffic with the G.711 standard and video traffic with the H.261 standard. All advanced functionality, like sharing data or other audio/video algorithms, is not accessible in this mode. With Release 8.5, this mode can be set in the on-screen user interface, which is be behind the password-protected parameters.

FIPS 140-2, level 1

All VSX systems with 128M of memory will be upgraded with this feature in VSX Release 8.5. These systems include VSX 3000*, VSX 5000, VSX 6000*, VSX 7000s, VSX 7000e, VSX 8000. Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS 140-2) is a standard that describes US Federal government requirements that IT products should meet for Sensitive, but Unclassified (SBU) use. The standard was published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Currently the VSX systems listed above are on the pre-validation list for FIPS 140-2 support. After validation, they will be fully compliant. This standard includes the following modes/features:

  1. Security mode: all access to the VSX system is secure and a password must be used to access any part of the system or the system’s software.
  2. Secure web (HTTPS): When accessing the VSX system via web-browser, a password must be used
  3. Secure Telnet and FTP: Secure telnet and ftp access via SSH for secure system administration and application connectivity

With this feature, VSX systems are the most secure video conferencing solutions in the industry.

*Applies only to refreshed models of the VSX 3000 and VSX 6000, which can be identified as VSX 3000A and VSX 6000A in the system information screen.

Multiple camera support

This release adds support for additional cameras for VSX 7000s, VSX 7000e and VSX 8000 from Polycom. Cameras supported include:

  1. Polycom PowerCam
  2. Polycom PowerCam Plus
  3. Sony EVI-D30/EVI-D31
  4. Sony EVI-D70, native mode (New!)
  5. Sony EVI-D100/EVI-D100P
  6. Sony BRC-300 (New!)

Which products will benefit from this software release?

VSX Release 8.5 is applicable for the V500, VSX 3000, VSX 5000, VSX 6000, VSX 7000, VSX 7000s, VSX 7000e and VSX 8000. The only exceptions to this are the security features (FIPS 140-2, security mode, secure web, telnet and FTP), which are not applicable to the V500, VSX 7000 and older models of the VSX 3000 and VSX 6000.

Consult the chart listed above for specific system support.

How do customers receive this upgrade?

VSX Release 8.5 is available on the Polycom website, specifically in the Polycom Resource Centre (PRC). New users to the PRC must create a username/password to access files on this section of the website.

Once at the PRC, simply go to the "Downloads" page and follow instructions to download the software onto any VSX or V-series system. The download process will include obtaining a key which will need to be inserted into the VSX or V-series system.
